Marathon Couples Therapy is an intensive approach to resolving specific crises or issues. It is a structured program resulting in a reduction of distress, resolution of specific problems and a stronger relationship.
As a certified Gottman Couples Therapist, I offer marathon therapy with the purpose of working directly and intensively for couples to resolve specific issues or repair past incidents. The course is conducted across two full days. The intensive process allows couples to successfully work through areas of gridlocked conflict that are keeping them stuck. With evidence-based communication strategies, couples learn how to convert hurtful and destructive communication patterns into a more considered dialogue. This results in meaningful understanding, uncovering realistic roadmaps for moving forward.
Prior to the two days, all couples complete a comprehensive clinical online assessment comprising of 480 questions about their current perspective regarding the relationship. This assesses friendship, intimacy, how well you know your partner, how you manage emotions and conflict, how you share your values and goals, and what gives meaning to your lives. There are also questions about parenting, housework, finances, trust, and individual areas of concern.
This style of therapy is popular with time-poor couples who have trouble attending regular sessions. Couples with “stuck points” can really benefit from marathon therapy as it is a great way of addressing these core issues. Couples who are on the brink of separation often book marathon therapy as a last chance at saving the relationship and are often surprised by how successful their relationship can be when given a chance. By intensively working at specific issues, the full day provides couples with a very clear idea about how they plan to move forward.
The cost of marathon therapy includes the pre-marathon assessment process inclusive of one 50 minute joint session, an individual consultation with each partner, the clinical relationship checkup assessment, the two full intensive days working with me at my practice in Drummoyne and a take home package of resources and interventions to continue practicing at home, plus 2 50 minus follow up sessions.
